Friday was a dedicated home day. We cleaned the bathrooms and took cold medicine and watched stuff on the Roku. Cleaning the bathroom had the added bonus of boring the kids to tears. I have this tendency to fully engage with them whenever I am with them. I miss them when I am at work and they are only awake for a few hours when I get home and at that time I am making dinner and doing bath-time and reading stories. This is good stuff to do but there isn't a lot of playtime. So when I am with them on the weekend I tend to be very very engaged. It means that they have become super demanding of my attention and that they lose all ability to amuse themselves when I am around. This is not serving any of us but I am so resistant to disengage because I feel like my time with them is so limited.
We are working on it...
But cleaning the bathroom gave them the option of coming in and talking to me and helping scrub the sink or going and playing on their own.
Viola! When I got back to the living room Kiernan was laying on the floor, waving his feet in the air singing and Megan was stacking blocks. They were happy and so was I. I am not sure if the answer is more time so that they don't feel so insistent on my attention or if I just need to be more boring haha.
The other reason we took it easy on Friday was that we knew there was a super busy weekend upcoming and Kiernan at least is relatively sick.
On Saturday we skipped church but went to Kiernan's first by himself swimming lesson. This was a bit of a trial run for his (hopefully) upcoming school attendance. I wondered how he would do without parents and was a little worried about his tendency to spaz out and not pay attention. No problem. He bounded straight into the water and for the most part did what he was supposed to. He was by far the most active kid in his class. I struggled so much as a kid with sitting still and paying attention but loved so much anytime I got to run around. I see this in him and wonder if I am projecting.
We dropped him off at home and then drove up to our buyers agent and had financial talks and chose some houses to go see.
On Sunday Skating lessons began. This time 'with parent' and given how much poor Kiernan fell on his butt I am glad he had David there to give him a hand. That being said his next skating lessons will be parent free. We went to Cabin John Skating rink. There are three skating rinks there and all of them were in heavy use. One with figure skating one with pee-wee hockey and one small one for the little kids.
Most of the skating that I saw was a form of ice marching. David said that was to keep the kids upright with their weight distributed directly over their skates. Watch these two videos to see his progress across the rink.
A great deal of falling and a great deal of perseverance I was really proud of his try again spirit. Additionally the only thing he seemed bothered by was the unexpected loud noises coming from the hockey rinks. Next time we will put him in a ski suit to protect his rear.
After skating we watched some pee-wee hockey and ate pizza and drove a mini Zamboni. We rushed Kiernan home and sped up to Urbana to meet our buyers agent.
The whole rest of the day was house hunting.
Holy Cow house hunting is stressful. I find it bizarrely disorienting to envision myself and my life and my stuff in house after house. The potential is too much after a fairly short amount of time. We saw 7 houses out of a list of 9. Of the ones we skipped the first house we couldn't get into (an open house that was so crowded that they locked the door!) and a later house that was scary and according to the sellers agent shouldn't be gone into without Hazmat suits.
We saw a few good places but nothing screamed buy me so next weekend we will do it all again.
I was so buzzy last night that I didn't get to sleep until 1 at which time Megan woke up with teething pain and hunger and we sent down stairs.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
so sleepy...
