We went to the fair this weekend.
Something that pleases me is that neither Kiernan nor Megan seem to have picked up my fear of rides. Its not heights for me, I love heights. There is something about the rides themselves that just terrifies me. Even watching my family get on something as innocuous, though admittedly large, as this Ferris wheel gave me a knot in my stomach. But
I cheer and wave and look as jolly as I can and pray. ha what a wuss
As they stride jauntily off I try not to make a huge deal of their bravery because I don't want to make going on a ride into something too remarkable. I am so proud though. Kiernan wants to go on rides, bigger and bigger rides, faster and faster rides!
While he and David went off to the bumper cars Megan and Nana and I did the Merry-go-Round. We started on a horse but she didn't like the up and down, so we did something semi-inadvisable and transferred mid-ride to a stable seat.
She still didn't seem to love it but she wanted to get right back on once it was over.
Unfortunately the rides didn't really get going until noon and we got there at 9 something-or-other to see the animals. Megan's nap is usually at 1130 so we had a rough time balancing her need to sleep with Kiernan's desire to do all the fair stuff.
We ate many fried things (Fired Oreo cookies and green beans and pickles and jalapenos) and we won some prizes and we took some very sleepy kids home.
Kiernan has adapted to water instead of juice so well!
One of his more entertaining new drinking games is the colorful cup routine. Each successive cup gets one more piece of ice than the one before it. He races from one end of the table to the other announcing his choice and drinking rapidly.
His kidneys must be so happy. ha
In the yard project front we had some interesting developments this week. One of the blueberry bushes is dead and one more of the lavender (what on earth am I doing wrong with this lavender?) but one of the cheap Amazon Japanese Maples has come back to life.
It is hard to see but this little red one has done well from the very start and cost only 19$.
But this little guy (also from Amazon and also 19$) arrived snapped off and dead looking. I put it into the pot and sort of forgot about it. Just in the last few weeks it started sprouting leaves!
On Friday morning I grilled up some tomatoes for breakfast and was thrilled at how beautiful they looked. They didn't taste half bad either. Megan and I would happily eat potatoes and tomatoes in one form or another for every meal given our 'druthers. So we cleaned the whole house of tomatoes in one day of gluttony. MMMMMMMmmmmmm fresh summer tomatoes!
Speaking of tomatoes, our normal tomato source at Scearce's is dried up this year. Due to hip replacement followed quickly by tumor removal followed quickly by eye operation our 'farm' in Silver Spring just never got going this year.
Poor Scearce's are so used to having 1+ acre in garden every year that they were genuinely unhappy to be so deprived.
Saturday was Kathryn's Daddy's birthday.
He is 84 this year and for his birthday we brought him a bag or farm stand tomatoes and took a load to the dump. These are not terribly romantic or interesting presents but I am very proud of them.
The kids sang Happy Birthday Grandpa with glee for the whole day.

I love this picture of everybody hanging out at the creek. This picture more than most really describes the mood at Scearce's for me. It is comfortable and familial and relaxed.
On Friday we donned our rain gear (hoodies) and headed out for the nature center.
Kiernan feels that with hoodies on he and Megan are twins. He kept reminding me of which one he was.
"Mom! I am the tall one."
"Mom! This is me its Kiernan!"
hehe
The nature center had the puzzle of all puzzles for my boy. He LOVES anatomy. He has a
"bones book" and we read it fairly regularly.

Additionally they have a great climbing area. I haven't seen one like this before. I like how the fake rocks actually look like rocks. I like how the difficulty level is the thing that limits the kids climbing instead of some easy to ignore sign. I like how none of the rope obstacles are alike.
Climbing is a big thing just now and this park really hit the spot!
When we got home I put Megan to bed and made Kiernan a little toy bow and arrow set with some of the brush I have been clearing.
He loved it. I got out my bow and let him try to pull it but so far no go on that venture.
Once Megan got up we played in the back yard and picked a baby pumpkin, which Megan promptly fell in love with.
There are fewer and fewer pictures of that crazy girl recently. Mostly this is because she has hit a clingy phase and anytime I take a picture if she is not in front of the camera she is in my arms. She is teething and climbing and potty training (ish) and chatty. She loves to say
"I'm a joke" when ever she dose something silly. She loves to make everyone laugh. Her super power is supersonic shrieking. She loves to swing and climb and watch Dora and Diego. She will occasionally refer to things in Spanish to the bafflement of all those not also constantly watching Dora and Diego.
Kiernan deconstructed his swing and made stirrups out of the chains so that he could walk on air.
He has decided to be a Cowboy when he grows up.
