So my anxiety is still kicking me around. I am in fact writing this at 2:25 in the morning because it woke me up. It is tapering off a bit though, possibly due in some part to my trying out a new thing.
I was listening to a podcast called the Tim Ferriss show when the subject of fear and anxiety came up. One of the things that caught my attention was about how men and women do fear and anxiety differently. It said that men are lousy at recognizing fear and that women are lousy at facing it (i am vastly paraphrasing here). It claimed that boys are habituated into bravery and that girls are habituated into emotional awareness.
So that the big thing with men is getting them to figure our triggers and so on and the big thing is getting women to do something about them other than just name them.
The woman (Caroline Paul) claimed that women would do well to practice micro-braveries.
To that end I am attempting to face my constant hypochondriac tendencies and make a few doctor s appointments.
It is ridiculous how much I am currently sure that the dentist is going to tell me that I have cancer.
I have therefore started small and made myself an eye doctors appointment.
Here I am in front of Mount Airy Eye Care being somewhat proud and somewhat disgusted with myself for being proud of making an annual eye check appointment.
Here is a soothing fish.
His name is Hector. He lives on my desk at work and soothes me.
HA!
Kiernan had his first school dance this week.
Going to Adventist school as I did, I had no idea what to expect.
I often feel cheated about dancing.
I would like to dance but cant ever get over the dancing is sinful thing.
I am not Adventist anymore but no one seems to have fully informed my psyche of this fact.
The dance was loud and had a lot more than dancing to it. Mostly it seemed like a giant overstimulating gym class. The girls dressed up and the boys didn't for the most part (I did spot a tuxedo tee shirt at one point).
There were games and face painting and there was a raffle and a limbo line. Kiernan seemed happy to see his friends but unwilling to jump into anything. Then he saw the board games and he was set.
A kid got hurt and a lot of kids ate too much junk food but it seemed like a completely satisfactory evening for nearly everyone.
On Saturday morning, much to my great pleasure, Amazon brought us the groceries. This required some forethought on my part but was quite worth it.
After breakfast we went biking at the Monocacy Aqueduct.
Kiernan is quite steady on his wheels these days but I figured Megan would give up the ghost early on.
I was entirely mistaken.
Despite having to work triple hard (flat-ish tires, dragging training wheels, and crooked seat) she muscled thorough about a mile of riding quite happily.
I want to get the grown up bikes fixed up and go for a real family ride soon.
It was beautiful outside.
It was warm and sunny and the flowers were coming out.
It was a little muddy but the kids went 'fishing' anyways.
When we finished up David put the bikes in the car and the kids played castle invaders.
Then we went out for a good build your own pizza lunch.
I am not crazy about Sponge Bob but as you can see the kids are.
My dad loves it too so maybe it skipped a generation.
During Megan's nap Nana and I went to get some plants.
We got this cool Cherry tree with 4 different cherry types grafted on so we can have sweet and sour cherries. I hope that works out!
Megan saw the neighbors burning brush and decided we were having a marshmallow emergency.
I used a handful of dryer lint to start this while she ran around the yard grabbing sticks. It worked very well.
The next day we planted lots of plants. Kiernan helped me a ton with this and it was great to spend some time with him just puttering around the yard and feeling the spring.
We planted 8 new lavenders and 2 new lilac bushes and some juniper up the hill where we cant mow, and a cherry tree and a peach tree and some blue flowers I got because they were so beautiful (Lithodora). We still have a few things to put in the ground. I am thinking of completely redoing the front walk bushes.
I staked and tied up the trees.
By mid week one of the peaches was blooming sweetly.
A few of the boarder flowers came back too.
We were going to have a fondue and hot tub party this week.
For which mom cleaned the kitchen and scrubbed the floors and made us a ton of counter space.
Then we postponed.
The kitchen looks great now though.
Poor mom.
Instead of the party we went out with Uncle Chris and Aunt Pammy and cousin Kaleb.
Megs and Kaleb were hitting it off adorably.
We went to Pizza and Pretzel Creations in Frederick. Their hummus sandwich is phenomenal.
It was a good choice.
It was odd going out on a weeknight with the kids but really nice too.
It was a good reminder of the things that I value the most. Good food and family for the win!
