Here we are in January

Please listen to this as you read the blog today

We made not Borscht.

We had a fun family visit

Someone turned 10 years old. I will name no names.

I made a bowl and a spoon.

The laser is great for intricate dragons.

We went heavy low tech after 3D printing and laser cutting.
Kiernan and I used one of my great Christmas presents to learn to carve spoons.
I only cut my finger once.

He wants to make a spork.

I made a mess of my computer desk but really enjoyed the carving. I am hoping to do more.

We went for a nice family hike.

We followed it with a nice family ice skate.

Our fun family get together was full of breakfast tacos. I love breakfast tacos.

We had fireworks and sparklers for New Years.

It was beautiful.

Its easier to do now that the nights get dark so soon and the kids are old enough to stay up later.

Happy New Year to you all.

Haven threw a Dickensian New Years party. I had been looking forward to it for months (since the Halloween party). I loved our costumes and we learned a set of period dances.

The kids were excited to go too.
Unfortunately I got a migraine that night. You can see I am barely able to open my eyes in these pictures.
I tried to go heavily medicated because of all the anticipation. I lasted maybe 20 minutes.
I hope they do another Dickensian thing.

One of the smash hits of the season was this cool little card game.
We have been planing a ton of it
Its fast and fun and even Megan has no problem with the rules.
Go find this game if you get a chance.

We went to downtown Frederick and saw the light boats in the canal,

A chili happy family enjoying the heck out of some quality time.

Her eyes match her hair.

We went to Scearces to split wood and hang out.

It was a weirdly warm day so while he split i took the kids for a walk.

It was great.

I printed something beautiful for Krishna for her birthday.

We got a wonderful snow.

I learned a wonderful new recipe.
It comes with this weird pan.
These are a Danish Christmas sort of treat called Aebleskiver. Here is the recipe .You will not be sorry to make them they are delicious.

I found them by accident looking for an ancient Wassail cake recipe. There was a challenge at Bardic for the month of January. We were asked to find a winter song from before 1700 that was not a Christmas song. Our hint was that Wassail was nearly always a January song. So I spent much of the month reading about Wassail traditions and trying to learn songs that would work.

The kids love them and they are as far as i can tell a fair approximation of an ancient viking wassail cake.

I made several batches as we had beautiful snow and no where to go.

We were so happy to try out our new snowblower.
Our new snow blower was having none of it.
David shoveled the whole drive again.
Boo.
He is going to clean out the carburetor. It is buried deep.
Oh well

Pax loves the snow.

David and Kiernan made a traditional family recipe of piroshki.
They are cabbage and potato and dill and onion and veggie dog and hand sized and warm and very satisfying

I got pulled over because my tag light was out. Kiernan was in the car with me and mortified. We ended up have a protracted and fruitful discussion on the criminal justice system because of it though.
David replaced the tag lights and I went to the police station to put myself back in compliance. That was all a new and semi nerve-wracking experience.

Mom made stuffed apples and got vanilla ice cream.

David 3D printed upgrades to our 3D printer.

I got a fabulous prize at bardic for my wassail stuff.
I have been carrying it around with me totemicly as a sign of the beauty of life and as a reminder of success.
Work is still rough. Haven came into my life at a very good time.

We went to Krispy Kream and it was great.

We got a giant roll of wham.
Man I love wham.

I braved some really frigid weather to get pictures of the super wolf blood moon. Our heater gave out during a polar vortex.
Oh so cold!

Megan printed a Hello Kitty fidget spinner.

I have been listening to a podcast call A History of the World in 100 objects by the British Museum. A very cool think about it is that they released the majority of the 3D scans of the objects to the public. So I can listen to the history of this handaxe from Olduvai Tanzania and then print one out for myself to examine in tandem.
I am so so pleased with this.
I think the poor kids are about to get a hefty dose of mom enthusiasm to deal with.

This is what it looked like printing. The straight lines are auto generated supports that just break off once the printing is done.
I am interested in getting more biodegradable plastics for this thing.

10 years is a long time.

For his birthday meals Kiernan chose strawberry shortcake and avocado toast for breakfast.
Also
A day off and subs for lunch.
A giant sushi platter and cheesecake for dinner.
That boy can plan my meals any day!
Yum
Plus the heating got fixed.

Happy birthday to my sweet boy.
