normally in my lab we don't handle anything that would raise any red flags pregnancy wise. We use buffer we use water we use siRNA in buffer or water so keeping the whole i am pregnant thing a secret is no big deal safety wise. This week however in a complete departure from normal activities i am getting to work on something with R&D, which is great. The bad part came a few days into this new project. We are now going to be using some fluorescent dyes and they contain a mutagen with a pregnancy warning.
boo
So i told Daryl.
Daryl is my boss.
Daryl is cool and he agreed that i would switch off with one of my co-workers (George) for the next part of the project.
So far so good.
The problem is that Paul (the R&D scientist i was working with) is feeling quite abandoned. I feel very much like he is right.
George hasn't been working on this experiment and is clearly not really into it. So Paul feels like I've really left him in the lurch. The purpose of working with both departments is that we will be able to independently verify each others data. Now because of my not working with him and George not being into it it all lands on him. Frankly he is already facing more work pressure than he should be and this only adds to it.
So i told Paul too.
not that it dose much good for his work situation.
i feel like a jerk.
i feel like i am letting him down.
i am not willing to risk the mutagens, i don't want to screw up someone else's life and either way it would happen.
either Paul now or baby later.
the thing is i know that with the DMSO it is only a chance of screwing up someones life and with Paul i am definitely screwing up someones life.
i know that the level of life screwing upedness is disproportionate in the other direction though.
Still yet today it sucks a bit to be pregnant for reasons other than feeling sick.
