Summer Starts and Venus Transits

Happy Summer in the hammock
Helping Nana water the garden

Today was the transit of Venus. We were prepared. I went to a welding shop and got some number 14 welding glasses. These were in fact inserts for welding masks and not goggles as I first imagined they would be. The shop was right by my work and they sold me one small and one large one at student discount after I said that I was going to show my son. They kindly treated me as an educator...which I suppose is right but it was kind of them to give me the extra price break.

As soon as I got home from work I took the kids out onto the back deck to set up the telescope.
Megan will not feature in these pictures as she was strapped to my chest when I took them.
I told Kiernan about not being able to look at the sun for safety reasons then showed him how to look through the smaller of the welding lenses.

Nana showed him how the telescope worked on trees down the block. I think that he didn't actually see anything through the glass or the telescope but he was pleased by all the activity and the new stuff.
He discovered that the front side of the welding lens is mirrored. He was delighted!

We taped the big lenses to the end of the telescope. High Tech!

Then we saw clouds.

some clear sky appeared everywhere the sun wasn't.

Eventually we went downstairs and watched NASA T.V.
