I want to ride my bicycle...

This week at our Tiger Den meeting we had an unexpected discovery. Most weeks we try to do one of the achievements and this week one of the boys moms decided we would work on Rolling Tigers .
Kiernan couldn't ride a bike as of Thursday but on Wednesday evening we worked on rolling and balancing so I gamely put his bike in moms jeep and headed out.
The first part of the lesson was a saftey review and a demonstration of famous bike riders and of people who use their jobs for work.

please play this video now

Then we went outside.

Kiernan's Tiger meetings are held at his school and so we went around back to use the basketball court.
There are 5 Tigers in his Den and there were 2 training wheels 2 actual riders and Kiernan who had no training wheels but also wasn't quite a bike rider yet.

This meeting went over by quite a bit because the boys were having so much fun we couldn't get them off the bikes.
Kiernan's best friend Alex (one of the bike riders) agreed to race Kiernan and inthe middle of the shuffling and scooting suddenly Kiernan peddled.
It was amazing... it was probably pretty normal but I was amazed.
More on that later.

On Friday I took Megan (Wonder Woman henceforth) to the Medowside nature center.
She talked to snakes and showed them how to use the microscope to look at bugs.

She measured her wingspan against other intimidating raptors.

We went for a hike and found another big snake.
She had a great time playing with the entire class that was there for a field trip.

On the way home we stopped by Kiernan's school to check out his Earth Day party.

After that it was home for Megans nap and back to the school to pick up Kiernan. I took him to Walmart and let him pick out a cheap fishing pole for our upcoming trip to see my grandparents in VA. We got a Frozen one for Megan too and when she got up they fished off the deck for quite a while.

On Saturday we had Tball and baseball.
This time the kids games were at the same time in different parks altogether.

Megan and I were at the school goofing around while Kiernan and David were at Watkins park not fooling around.

Kiernan said that he wanted to try the catchers position this time. For a kid who until about 2 weeks ago was afraid of the ball coming at him this was a very strange desire. Not wanting to stand in the way of progress we made sure he was wearing his cup and let him petition his coach.
His coach let him have a go and even told him he had done well when it was over.
Progress progress everywhere with this boy.

As soon as baseball was over we ran to a quick lunch and then over to the fire station for Cubmobile races.

Cubmobile races are sort of like soapbox races. They are gravity driven . They are foot steered and Mount Airy is so hilly that we don't even need a starting ramp.

The weather was perfect and Kiernan was in racing mode so off they went down the hills and around the corners with helpful parents and boy scouts to help them lug those things back up to try it all again. They even let moms give it a go.
The shoes for brakes thing works surprisingly well.

On Sunday in reward for good behavior and bravery and a good report card Kiernan got to pick a reward. He picked a trip to the local amusement park, Adventure Park USA .
We had been talking about Davids company picnic at Hershey park this summer and about roller coasters and both the kids wanted to try some out.
Kiernan as it turns out is now tall enough to try the real thing.
This place is fun but far far too expensive so we told the kids they could do 3 rides each then we were of to a nice cheap family picnic.
They both chose coasters of appropriate size.
David went with Kiernan on his and said that he want sure how it was going because Kiernan was completely silent the whole time. Then when it stopped the crazy boy yelled at the top of his lungs and threw his arms into the air and started a little dance of joy.
He told us that is was so fast it took his breath away and that it was amazing.

Then he want with Megan on her rides and she was so relieved to have him there she held his hand and gave him a kiss.

She was big enough to go on the tea cups on her own and even got an extra free ride cause one of the doors popped open on another kids cup so they had to stop it and start over.

After the fun and the picnic we went home and cleaned and gardened and did some laundry.

I put tomatoes into the ground and into pots.
I separated out a few to take to work.

In the evening I took both the kids to the school again for a little more bike practice.
I think its going rather well.

Now we need to work on learning to use the brakes!

Fundraiser note here
Both kids have donation pages up for their little league teams. There is one week left to donate so if you want to support small kids with bats and lots of voulenteers please do so here for Megs or here for Kiernan
