To the end of Feb with a departure to Japan and a termination from work

Its super cold in Mount Airy and not at all like March should be.

We went to Scearce's for cleaning and wood chopping and general house assisting.
Poor Mr. Scearce went straight from the hospital to the rehab center. They were pretty much out of split wood so we cut and split stuff from Krishna's parents and from the yard generally.
We got a chainsaw to and from Ace and it worked much better after that. We also go an appointment for the log splitter to be fixed.
I hope once all the tools are in good working order we can do a bang up job of replacing the depleted stock. Also good working tools can go a long way in injury prevention.

Oh look its lots of Scearce's.

We had a fancy tea party at Licia's house and then a sleep over. He new place is very nice and the kids loved having a night out.

Kathryn and Licia and Erena baked all day and by the time we got there we had lots of cool little tea treats to try for it.

The children were messy. Poor Licia and her nice new clean house.

We had a fun girls day out at Spa World.

We got a snow day following the tea party so instead of going to work we did fun house stuff. I got around to doing Megan's hair like a rainbow again.

It turned out fairly well.

The red in the back faded almost instantly.

The blue and green and purple all look vibrant though.

Kiernan played video games.

Then things warmed up and we got back to work.
As you know I have been having a hard time at work for the last year or so and on Monday they decided to terminate my employment.
I am unemployed.
I have never been fired before.
It was a blow.
I was looking around for work but hadn't found anything yet. I was really hoping to stay with the company. I like my coworkers so much and I was only 1 month away from 15 years at Qiagen,
with a bonus and extra vacation and all the shiny placards I could eat.
I am OK and got a severance but it smarts and I am worried about getting another job.
My confidence is, you may not be surprised to learn, in the gutter at present.
I decided to use the rest of the week as vacation and enjoy Kathryn's visit and try to get my head straight.

We went roller skating and made cakes.

The kids have a lot of questions and I am taking some comfort in their presence.
Kiernan wrote me a golden slip to counter my pink slip.
Megan tells me that i am irreproachable (in her own sweet way).
David had been wanting me out of there and though he is worried about money he says that he is happy to see me free of it.

My coworkers have as usual been exceptional.
We had lunch with some of them and I have been texting a lot to look for new jobs and to feel a bit less amputated.

I got into a cooking frenzy as I do when stressed.
I made a nice shepherds pie for David but I used mashed cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes.

We did some Nailed It cake decorating.
Kathryn as it turns out is quite good with fondant and butter cream.

Megan and Erena made a strawberry cake that they got from Jenet on the family reunion day. They split it between the two of them and put it into large cake pans so that they ended up with pancakes of strawberry to decorate.

Kiernan made one from scratch.

Megan's was a bbq cake with flowers and hot dogs and eggplant and a cheesy hamburger.

She did a great job.

I had the day off (now all the days off) to take David in for a colonoscopy.
That was nerve wracking.

The biopsies aren't back yet but nothing looked to dire.
Given the week I was having I was half expecting some terrible news but everything seems OK.
He is always funny when drugged.

I looked at seed catalogs and ordered a few things for the spring and thought about potential and change and growth.

My favorite thing I will grow this year is the Long Pepper. Please read this.

I took some time to de-string my Lyre. It popped a string and I wanted to try something like the ball ends that they have on guitar strings.
Mom gave me some of her jewelry beads and I tied the Nylgut strings under those. They seem to be holding steady so far.

Its a fun experiment, combining that with the foam I glued under the tail piece to prevent scratching the whole thing is becoming less period but hopefully more livable.

It all looked exactly the same when I finished.
Ha

We got more snow.

We did an escape room. I had been wanting to do one with Kathryn and had scheduled this one before everything went down.

We were paleontologists. We solved the room and had fun and I slept through the night for the first night since the firing.

At dark thirty Saturday morning we walked up our ice slope and headed off to the airport.

The airport is boring from what I am told.
It was lovely to have Kathryn here, even though she keeps saying that her presence is cursed (her dads leg and my job are her primary exhibits here).
They made it back safe and sound and are straight into work and school.

I have decided to do lots of things with the kids while I am off.
We went hiking in the cold.Mount Airy has a cool rails to trails system.

With free icicle stalactites.

It was sunny and cold and the spring birds were singing their heads off.

Some green was peaking out of snowy nooks.

There were ice prisms on the trees above.

Plus a playground at the end of the trail.

Yesterday we went swimming.

They wanted to playground instead but I was hoping for the hot tub.

They did not want to leave when we left.
So far so good.

Today is Ash Wednesday.
I am thinking about being a better person and about penitence and forgiveness. I am thinking about spring and music and work and duty.
Its a good time for me to think about greater things and focus less on minutia.
I have started a music channel on YouTube. Here it is if you want to listen to me try to make music.

Please enjoy this important Ash Wednesday update from Megan:
