Early Spring 2020

I finally tried out my new bow. I'm not sure if its because I haven't been shooting during the cold or because it is a new bow but this one takes what feels like a great deal more effort. We tried to shoot the back target from the deck and the bow definitely has the range for it even if we don't quite have the aim yet. The leaves were so sparse that it was pretty much a clear shot.

Much to my shock the week after Kathryn left I found myself in the gym at 530 in the morning riding the bike. Oh the virtue.

I sat down to try to catch up on my Safeway monopoly. I won many fine bread products. I won bagels and doughnuts and breadcrumbs and 5 dollars.

I got sick. I got sick enough to take several days off of work. I worried that I had Corona Virus but then Kathryn said that if I had the sniffles it was something else.

She sent me pictures of Japan in mask.
The world started catching up with Yoshi's level of worry about the virus.

I started playing Star Dew Valley. I read a book called Blood, Sweeat, and Pixels about the process of creating video games and found myself really wanting to play a lot of the games that the chapters were about. This one was written by one guy by himself and is known for being peaceful and sweet. An option to sooth in the game is a visit to an Onsen style hot springs. I was feeling stressed enough about being sick and the uncertainty of the virus and the markets that I made the good choice to start some gaming again.

I went out to Panera to get soup on a day off and met with Krishna (also sick) and Michelle (not yet but soon the be sick). It was the last time I saw them in person for who knows how long. We are all on lock down now.

We got some daffodils in the house to protect them from the cold. The smelled so strongly of growing things and made me ready for spring warmth.

We took the kids to DC for a museum run. I wanted to go to the botanical gardens and put my poor sinus' in some humidity and see some growing things.

I love living so close to the Smithsonian. I love the art and the history and the beauty at our doorstep.

There was an orchid exhibit

The kids did a very independent turn and wondered around without us. This left David and me to have a romantic quiet walk through trees.

The outdoors were cold and windy but we had a look at some of that stuff too.

Megan was particularly photogenic.

At home there was some exciting to me news. This showed up at Safeway. When I was a kid this was my favorite veggie meat. You could only get it in a giant ugly roll that weighed many lbs..
Now here it is re-branded and all sliced and way more expensive but also available without having to drive nearly an hour to get it.

I spent more early time at the gym riding the bike.

Flowers out in the world began to bloom and occasionally I wore a jacket instead of a coat.
On the 12th of March the Governor decided to close the schools.
I have not been a fan of our Governor for a long time now but I have to say that I am so pleased with how he has handled this pandemic so far.

I made a school from home list for the kids.
Initially the schools said that the closure would take the place of the snow-days we hadn't used and the spring break we were about to have.
Mt kids don't handle boredom well and I like life better when they are learning so we made a very pared down school schedule to try out.
I designed this around their normal school schedules plus things I wanted them to focus on. I added a classics and technology.

I started working from home on and off. I was going into work Mon/Wed/Fri and working from home Tues/Thurs and then switched it around as things got more virus driven.

I read Greek mythology to the kids and cooked (above the best and strangest of the burger tries ) a lot and even started to clean out my crazy disorganized garage.

David fixed the hot tub and we decided that staying home more suited us.
Kiernan had been having trouble with his teacher and we had already had one meeting about it but I felt like it made no difference whatsoever. Being home made him eat and sleep better and I have to admit it was wonderful for my social anxiety to not have to go out into the world and try to do all the normal things.

We had Pi day pie.

We started our seedlings

We are trying some new seedpod starters. they start flat and then hydrate large and you only have to water them once a week to every 10 days.

We put in the potatoes and onions and garlic as it was getting warmer.

For the first time I tried some grow mats and some lighting to speed the seeds along.

Fewer and fewer people were showing up at work. Look at my lonely car over there.

Megan made a beautiful spring cake all on her own.

My friend Judy send me this picture of us when we were young and fresh faced and on a surfing trip. I love this picture so much.
