Guy Fawkes night and a hike

We ran out of time to make the proper paper mache masks, but we still made something to burn.
It was mostly just an excuse to have a bonfire and roast marshmallow. Some of it was because we love V for Vendetta. One way or another it was wonderful fun.

The fire burned easily and it was just cold enough that the warmth had us all leaning in. Aunt Judy came over and brought Vejalinks and mom got jumbo marshmallows and made great chili. We hung out and burned stuff and ate and got sticky.

David had no mask and needed none.

It is so cool to have a yard and to be able to have a fire at any old time. We are still discovering all of the random things we can do that we were never able to do before. Here is the view from the back deck the next morning.
We are spending many nights out in the hot tub. The air is freezing and the hot tub is steamy and it is amazing.

On Friday we went to see grandma and grandpa Scearce. Grandpa is recovering from eye surgery. He has stitches in his eye. The mere idea of stitches in the eye makes me twitch. Poor Grandpa Scearce. The kids gave him lots of hugs. Megan crawled into his lap and told him she loved him.
When I heard that my heart just melted. I must say Grandpa didn't mind it either.
Our intention was to go to Sweet Frog with aunt Licia and then put Megan down for naps. Unfortunately when we got there we found out that winter hours had kicked in. I was thinking to head home to return later but Kiernan was more interested in staying. In the midst of my explanation I spotted a bowling alley that I went to as a kid.
With no more ado down the stairs we went for the kids first bowling experience.

I learned not long ago that duckpin bowling is not a national thing. I love regional specialties. When I was a young I traveled to stay with family in Kansas and spend many many weekends in West Virginia but I lived in the MD/VA/DC area most of the time. At that time regionalism was everywhere. I was surprised to go to KS and see films that had closed in my local theaters just opening there. I was fascinated by the differences in restaurant offerings and clothing. Now when I go to KS or to WV everything is the same. It is all Starbucks and Regal cinema and Hot Topic. Duckpin bowling for me is this last tiny piece of Maryland-ism to embrace.

Kiernan loves bowling.

An Hour later Sweet Frog achieved and happy exhausted kids ready for long long naps we went home.
I want to thank Licia especially for all of this. She doesn't like games and she doesn't like bowling and she offered an hour and ended up giving 2. She watched kids and bowled and joined us for a sticky mess of a Sweet Frog experience, gamely and with a great good humor.

On Saturday morning we headed out early to meet up with Uncle Chris and Aunt Pammy for a hike at Great Falls. It was freezing out (36 degrees).

On Sunday we worked on house stuff. The great toilet lid transition is nearly complete and the garage looks about a week or two from ready for my treadmill and weight machine acquisition, the fridge is stocked with roasted veggies and winter soups and the slide bolts have been acquired.

Oh yes and the hot mulled cider is flowing freely.

This is the best pot of french onion soup I have ever made. It took 3 hours minimum. I wish you could come try some. Feel free to stop by.
