This week started out with lots of good sledding, an auspicious start to any week.
On the other hand Wednesday saw a rough Doctors visit for Kiernan.
His 5 year annual check up started out smoothly. He enjoyed his vision and hearing test. He likes his Dr. very much and giggled though the physical exam. He impressed all with his vocabulary.
"I hate shots! Hate em' with a passion and a vengeance!"
But
Then it was time for the shots. His left arm got a chicken pox vaccine but his right got an MMR.
He asked me if the shots would hurt. I said yes. He asked how much they would hurt. I said that typically they stopped hurting in about 30 sec. and did he want to use my stopwatch to see if that was the case for him.
He did.
The first shot stopped hurting after 28 sec..
The second shot killed from the get go. He yelled when the needle went in and he started crying and shaking. He cried and shook his arm around for 9 minutes and 58 sec. Then about 5 minutes later he started crying and shaking his arm again for another few minutes.
He scared me when he then fell into a deep sleep from which it was hard to wake him.
He said to me that he didn't enjoy that Doctors appointment even 1%.
I told him that he enjoyed it 0%.
He was amazed.
"MMoooommm how did you know that? Its true 0%!"
By the end of the car ride he decided that he enjoyed his visit negative infinity percent.
Rounding the day out nicely was the birthday celebration. Nana and David share a birthday and even though it fell in the middle of the week this year, precluding a real party, we had cake and lasagna and sang happy birthday.
Then the weather got weird. For once this did not mean a polar vortex. It got warm...Spring warm. We got thunderstorms and temperatures nearly in the 60's. The piled up snow and the ice started to melt. We looked for fun indoor things to do to pass the time until the rain had stopped.
We found Chuck E. Cheese.
When I was a kid I went to Chuck E. Cheese for the occasional birthday party. I didn't really like it. I loved the games and the chance for pizza. I hated the noise and the crowds and the sense of chaos that always set my teeth on edge. It was all a sort of dark blur of red plastics and blaring alarms.
I knew there was a Chuck E Cheese in Frederick. I blew it off imagining that the kids would be as overwhelmed as I had been.
Oh foolish mommy!
First I was strategic, they opened up at 9 AM. My childhood visits had of necessity been dinner affairs. We went at 10:30 to get out of the rain and to give ourselves a clean cut off point. Megan's naps happen between 11:30-12:30.
Next we were lucky. The facility was clean and bright. The staff was friendly and the low population of a morning visit offered the kids space and time to figure everything out.
Lastly, and I must constantly bear this in mind, my kids are not me. Megan is never bothered by loud noises like I was and Kiernan has more confidence and willingness to explore than I remember of myself.
The kids found a favorite activity and stuck to it for the most part as kids tend to do. They loved the pizza and both ate 2-3 slices.
Megan loved a little car ride that sang the ABC's to her and Kiernan found a "peddle powered" helicopter that he adored.
After naps we went to try out the park.
It was slushy and muddy and cold.
It was also warmer than last week and outdoors and we were all very happy to be there.
On Saturday it was warm again and we went to church in the sunshine. The kids both had a great time. In the beginning of the year its all Genesis and fun. Creation for toddlers means stuffed animals and Noah's ark stories for the Pre-K set.
We went out for a treat of noodles afterward.
The rest of the day was spent clearing snow from our parking spaces (still not quite done but ooohhh our backs) and clearing snow from the back deck. While David and I worked the kids played really well. They got out their sidewalk chalk and their peddle powered conveyances and entertained themselves (for the most part).
We did some prep for Megan's furniture re-do.
I investigated wood worthy primers and got the chainsaw blade replaced and fixed.
Sunday morning early on David broke out his new electric sander and started in on the wood furniture to be whitened.
It was no longer warm and his bare feet made me crazy.
The priming went smoothly but I didn't buy enough so there was an emergency trip to Home Depot with the kids. The plan for the day was that I would give David a bit of a grown up day. I decided to do it after Megan's nap. SO while David worked on the whitening I made my great wild mushroom soup. Check out these crazy mushrooms!
Once that started simmering I went out on the deck with Kiernan to do the mirror. Notice in the photo above that this mirror came with a very heavy gold painted wooden frame. We had a good time working together. Kiernan loved doing a real job and I loved hearing him chattering away about this and that. He too made me crazy with bare feet in the cold...like father like son.
When Megan got up we headed down to Scearce's. Megan played on the play-set with Grandpa and Aunt Licia and Kiernan recovered from carsickness inside with Grandma, teaching her all about Angry Birds Go! I went to see a cute baby Kaleb and his sweet parents. I delivered a few containers of mushroom soup and got to hold a baby. Then it was back to my own crazy kids and the ever comforting Scearces'.
Look how well those deer are camouflaged.
On Monday morning we scraped the paint off the mirror and hung it back up. So far so good. Megan's bed looks great and it is easy to envision how the white furniture will work with the trim.
The bookshelf was already white and a fairly close white to boot. The mirror looks good and the dresser will look great once its done. The white is brightening the room as we hoped it would with all that brown.
So far so good.
