We are working on staining the banisters. This was going to be a fairly simple strip, sand and stain job. It has taken several more than a week.
It started out well.
Then things went off kilter. There was a dew point issue. There was a too heavy application issue. There was a Megan getting very sick and all projects being shelved.
Megan was acting so unMegan like. She was whiny, she was clingy and she was clearly in pain.
We went to the Dr.
Megan had an ear infection and sinusitis.
Megan is on Antibiotics. She is having some discomfort with it but so far they aren't bad enough for a request for medication change. Her fever is gone and she has (just) begun sleeping on her own again.
That was Tuesday.
On Wednesday David and I went to Spa World.
He loved it and I felt incredibly successful.
He has decided that there is no massage but shiatsu.
He was not at all phased by the mandatory nudity in the bade pool. He looked great in the orange gigi jammies. He knows how to appreciate a sauna or 10.
After steaming ourselves to oblivion we went to Zaytinya and took advantage of Turkish week.
It was delicious!
Thursday was a normal day except for Kiernan for whom it was the last day of the work week.
Friday was Fair Day.
It was not only fair day for us but for all students in the Frederick County School System.
I think this is so cool.
He came home with a map of the fair and the educational opportunities therein.
They were great.
We saw livestock and did 4H activities.
Then we went to the midway where Kiernan discovered that he is tall enough to get on some of the grown-up rides.
Here he is on his very first honest to goodness roller-coaster.
1 He loved it.
2 Thank God for mom who is willing to get on this contraptions with the kids!
He took Megan on a few rides as well.
The high point for me though was the race car ride. The race car ride takes a fairly slow straightway and ends it off with a drifty spinney swoop. It proved to be more than Megan had bargained for.
By the 2nd or 3rd circuit she was done and proceeded to melt down. She cried and yelled and I watched helpless from the sidelines, fretting to mom the whole time like a useless ninny.
Megan scooched closer to Kiernan and I saw that sweet boy talk her down from her fear and all the way over to excitement and joy in the ride.
I am so proud of that.
After the fair we went home and packed up the cars for camping.
Kiernan was ready to roll.
But first we had to make it to soccer practice.
We got to the cabin and settled in quite happily but for the fact that a few of our hoped for guests couldn't make it.
We spent Saturday morning exploring.
Megan climbed things.
We bonded
and ate
and found snail shells and caterpillars.
and princesses.
We went back down for a soccer game at 11.
A huge advantage of this place is how close it is to Frederick. We kept all our commitments and had our time in the woods to boot.
Aunt Lore came up and fed us veggie chili and cornbread.
She even stayed long enough to read the kids their bedtime story.
The next morning we made pancakes and packed up.
Mom went straight to the orchard and we made a small excursion to the falls for a little hike.
Then we went to the orchard too. This is a place that Opa used to go quite a bit and he was in our thoughts the whole time.
Mom bought a huge case of apples and made stewed apples and apple sauce and 3 quart bags of sliced apples for pies to be.
After we got home we mowed the lawn, fixed the wheelbarrow, washed the cars, did laundry, made a great from scratch dinner of split pea soup and bitter greens, had a fondue, finished the banisters and got everyone to bed at a reasonable hour.
Victory!
